These essays were collected as part of the field notes, translated by Aram Udol, and sent in letters from Joel M. Halpern to Carl and Nettie Halpern during the time spent in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. The first essay is from a 23 year-old man who grew up in Luang Prabang, and went to the teacher training school in Vientiane. He speaks about the school and the villagers in a village near Luang Prabang where he teaches. The second essay is from a 21 year-old man originally from Savannakhet province, also educated in Vientiane. He teaches at a village near Luang Prabang. The children at his school come from three different villages.
