Letter from Joel and Barbara Halpern to his parents during their time in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. This letter describes a trip from taken in late April and early May 1957 by the Halperns up the Mekong River to visit a number of villages and see USOM funded teachers with the Inspector of Education in Luang Prabang. This letter describes various different villages and the trip on the river. They described the villages they visited and a ceremony celebrating a house building. They also describe the return journey on a barge run by a Chinese merchant who lives in Luang Prabang and was transporting rice and garlic back to the city. They also describe many of the sites along the river including a Buddhist cave temple.
