'My father was born in 1872. This is his father, my paternal grandfather. Carlos was an unusual name for boys of old New England ancestry. Carlos was named for a young baby prince in Spain, born Juan Carlos. Our ancestors did not read local papers for local news, they knew who was born and died. Their news was that of Europe and foreign lands. Carlos was the son of Horace Merwin and Sarah Florida Peet. Carlos was a farmer in Merryall in New Milford, Connecticut. He and his brother Garwood drew straws to determine which would fight in the Civil War. The brother died in Antietam. Carlos married Mary Alice Monrow and has my father Garwood Monroe Merwin. His connection to the island is that Carlos is my grandfather. He died in 1885. Pictured: Carlos Peet Merwin.'
