'I love that the daughters claimed this picture should have been destroyed. David William is the son of Jeremiah Mayhew, who went to Maine to become a potato farmer. Potatoes were used for starch, an important product in the early 1800s. They returned to the island and David William went West in the Gold Rush, perhaps running a gang of stage robbers. He came to the island to say goodbye to his parents but married Abbie, the young widow of his cousin. Abbie's father was a whaling captain. Abbie and David William were my husband's great grandparents. Written on back of photo: 'July 4th 1892--I think 1891 or 1890--D. William Mayhew and family, all but Jury who was out on the milk route. Photo taken by the old shop by John E. Howland on his way to the pond for trout. We were ready to go to the strawberry bed. Addie said years later these photos should be destroyed.' Pictured, from left to right: David William Mayhew, Abbie Atwood Luce, Will Mayhew, Georgene O. Mayhew, Alice Mayhew, Stella Mayhew, and Adelaide Mayhew. Location: By the shop.'
