'I am a distant relative of U. S. Grant who was also related to Betty Merchant. Betty's aunt (Miss Ripley) sold the memoirs to the Vineyard people by subscription. The order book contains the signatures of these people & whether they chose leather sheep binding or fine cloth. President Grant wrote his memoirs when he was dying. He was already in bed, but wanted to complete this work so that his family would have some money after he died.'
