'There are three Massachusetts Crewmen: Bob Doherty (Fall River), Luigi Iacovello (Chelsea), and Billy Wood (Lowell). All wounded, all captured. Pictured: Standing) flight engineer George Goetz, radio/waist gunner Bob Doherty, waist gunner Luigi Iacavello (from Chelsea, MA), ball turret gunner Roy Johnson, waist gunner Everett Johnson, tail gunner Charles Haywood. (kneeling) pilot Paul Herring, co-pilot Charles Beard, bombadier Billy Wood, navigator John Wilson. Location: 96th Bomb Group Air Base. Added by Boyd Allen on August 8, 2012: The fellow, with the mustache, that is standing at the extreme right is without a doubt Charles Haywood, my late uncle by marriage to my mother's sister June. He had to bail out, and was taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans. The day before his foot was to have been amputated, due to a severe foot infection, he was released to the care of the Red Cross, and repatriated. Uncle Charlie was a lively gregarious fellow, that loved the outdoors, and kept himself in good shape all of his life. He spent most of his working life in Carlsbad, NM where he was a jr. high school shop teacher, and summertime park ranger, first at Carlsbad Caverns National Monument, and later at Rocky Mountain National Park. I have many fond memories of Charley who was well liked by all who knew him.'
