'Taken just outside our apartment in 8 Whittier Place on Halloween, just before trick or treating. My son has an interest in ships and tragedies. Titanic, for example--and in this case, the Lusitania. When we decided to get rid of our old pushchair, Edward was not ready to let it go, so as a compromise, my husband Kevin offered to turn it into the Lusitania (for Halloween), on the understanding we would get rid of it on November 1. Edward agreed. So, using a great deal of cardboard, zip-ties, and paint, the Lusitania was created, with the help of both kids. On Halloween, Edward, dressed as the captain, rode the rolling Lusitania through the West End to Beacon Hill for trick or treating, with Jemima fluttering along as a butterfly. The Lusitania didn't survive until Nov. 2, but this time suffered the fate of Kevin and his pliers, not a German torpedo. Pictured, from left to right: Jemima Backhouse (daughter, three) and Edward Backhouse (son, five).'
