Haitian Creole Summer Institute, UMass Boston 2008
Description:
'I attended the Haitian Creole Language Summer Institute at UMass Boston in 2008. Although I grew up speaking Haitian Creole at home for over 20 years, I had not learned how to read and write. I was born in the United States, and wanted formal instruction in my parent's native language. Both my parents immigrated from Haiti to the United States. Chelsey and I were in the advanced level group. She was preparing for research in Haiti for her PhD dissertation. The experience was phenomenal and I met wonderful teachers and students from all over the world, who have a love for Haiti and its people! This photo was taken in McCormack Hall where classes were held daily for 3 weeks. It was the last day of class. Pictured: Michelle Gachette and Chelsey Kivland.'
