  <mods:abstract>'Schooner 'Ernestina,' now berthed in New Bedford, is a unique ship with an illustrious North American history as well as an international history, making transatlantic voyages between Cape Verde and the United States. This photo is memorable because Ernestina was on her way to the 'Tall Ships' parade in 1976 when she was dismasted. This event catalyzed a 6-year effort, Friends of Ernestina/Morrissey, to help Cape Verde restore her. I helped to lead this campaign, with Michael Pletner, Don Ramos and hundreds of volunteers. The schooner finally made this trip back to the United States in 1982, after Cape Verde made a gift of her to the 'people of the United States.' We set up the state Schooner Ernestina Commission legislation and New Bedford was named as her home port. I serve on the commission. Ernestina has been an educational and a cultural vessel since the 1980s, traveling up and down the East Coast. Because of the need for restoration, she has not sailed since 2004.
