'This was the first day of a pilot program that the Friends of Boston Harbor Islands and high school students learn the 3 Rs of our Harbor Islands--Reuse, Renewal, and Revive. We focused on the change in use of the islands in different time periods and discussed how re-use has led to re-creation of land and structures on the harbor. We were excited about starting a program that hopefully will continue in future years. Isabel DeLaura and Hannah Givertz joined the FBHI volunteers in discovering that treasures for learning can be found in unexpected places. During the first week of the program, we gathered sea glass and made a mosaic of Nix's Mate as we learned about the changes in the islands around the harbor over time. It was moving to see their Nix's Mate disappear back into the water. Pictured, from left to right: Hannah Givertz, Isabel DeLaura, and Charlotte Knox.'
