Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands on Nix's Mate
Description:
'Nix's Mate was once an eleven-acre island. Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands chose Nix's Mate as their logo because it represents the vanishing heritage of the islands and the islands need friends to help with their preservation and conservation. Friends volunteer John Forbes organized the trip in 1991. Nix's Mate has had a day marker since 1803, when the Boston Marine Society identified this area of the harbor for this aid-to-navigation. Today, the United States Coast Guard owns and maintains it. Between 2001 and 2002, this historic structure was restored by Atlantic Mechanical Company, Inc., from Maine. In 2003, Nix's Mate was designated a National Historic Place, thanks to the efforts of the U.S. Coast guard, Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands, and the Mass. Historic Commission.
