'School committeeman Joseph Lee had adapted to sailing a 30' Navy whaleboat built in Charlestown in 1943. Mr. Lee had started community boating in the early 1940s. Now he kept this whaleboat in the Charles River near the community boating. We went out every night in the summer. The boat had 'capacity of 40 men.' Therefore, local teenagers, many from the west end, went sailing every night and weekends in the harbor and camping overnight on the islands. Thompson Island is in the background.'
