'Patrick Gavin was a portrait painter. He was my father and Grayce Carney's husband. This is a self-portrait, painted in Florence. While Patrick was painting the portrait of the Director of Long Island Hospital (in Boston Harbor), he also painted the stars on the dome of the hospital chapel. Suddenly, he heard,'Help! Help!' It turned out that Grayce Carney, Patrick's future wife, had fallen into the heating pit under the floor. This was their first meeting, and they married a year later. Pictured: Patrick Gavin, born 1905.'
