'After years of planning and negotiating, the newly renovated and expanded Waltham Public Library opened in the fall of 1994. I had been working in the library seven years by then, and I had seen the transition from the days of the card catalog and the dingy stacks to this gorgeous library with tables full of computers. The Dedication Ceremony included speeches delivered from the portico at the front of the building made by some of the key people involved in securing construction funds. In addition to Senate President William Bulger, Library Board Chair Father Bill Mawhinney and others, the Governor, the Senator, the Mayor and the Library Director spoke to the crowd. After the speeches there was an open house with music, food, flowers, and tours of the new building. I think this photo was taken before the ceremony began. Tom Jewell was Library Director in Waltham until 2008 when he retired after 32 years of outstanding leadership. He and Assistant Director Tamara Chernow were the team
