'This is Christmas Eve dinner at my mother's. She served a toasted suckling pig and brought it to the table with an apple in its mouth, which brought my husband and his friend to roaring laughter. They were both fishermen at the time. Joăo C. Joăo ended up testifying in a probe into drug smuggling in the port of New Bedford. As a result, he was placed into the Victim's Protection Program, left the country and ended up dying. His infant son, Derek, grew up without knowing him.
