Sarna Amos #9
- Description:
-
This lecture begins with Prof. Sarna summarizing Amos Chapter 7 before he starts discussing Chapter 8. To begin his talk, Sarna notes that in the Hebrew Bible there is no real concept of time. Again, Sarna emphasizes the imapct Hellenstic philosophy had on Hebrew and culture. This leads to a discussion of the pronouncaiton of "qayits' between Israel and Judah because of regional dialects. Sarna then talks about ancient pottery in Samaria and the words discovered on these artifacts. As the lecture continues, Sarna points out that in the first few verse of Chapter 8 that real prophets, such as Amos, do not want to be prophets. Because they receive images of doom and love their people, real prophets struggle and suffer. Following the pattern of the previous lectures, Prof. Sarna examines the lingustics and various translations of the text. In verse 5, Amos mentions the new moon. Sarna notes that in ancient times that during the new moon was considered a festival day for women. This leads to a brief discussion about coinage and doing business based on the text found in Amos 8:5 where the people ask "When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain."The second part of the lecture starts with looking at the disruption of wealth in ancient times. This leads to a discussion on loans and taking interest. As Sarna breaks down verse 9, he notes that based on Amos description the prophet is referring to an eclipse that will occur. In the latter part of the lecture, Prof. Sarna looks at the idea of guilt in regard to Samaria.
