Describes his visit to town and walking from house to house buying eggs and bread, learning how the French hid household belongings from the Germans. Many houses have maps and atlases that they consult frequently. They were asked about news on the radio that American forces had infiltrated Germany through Switzerland, which was "astounding to us," and which Carl hopes is true. Also remarks on laundry difficulties, mail, his family and their treatment of Edith including a recent letter from his mother, and why he cannot write much about his work.
