Born in Manchester England, he entered the United States service at age 16, in the military telegraph corps serving in the last two years of the Civil War. In 1878 he was chosen general secretary of the Brooklyn YMCA. In 1880 he moved to Denver and after regaining his health he embarked in the real estate business with much success. His business ventures allowed him to contribute to various institutions in the Denver area, including the YMCA. In 1890, Mr. Chamberlain was elected president of the YMCA and the Denver Chamber of Commerce. "Mr. Chamberlain has proven to us by his deeds that he is a noble, generous man, and that while he is blessed with an abundance and is himself enjoying the full benefits of his wealth, he takes pleasure in making others happy and finds it indeed blessed to give" (The Great West, Frank L. Dana, 1890).
