This photograph depicts members of the McKinley Literary Society at the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College. It is thought to have been taken at their 25th reunion held in 1910 or 1912, but it may also have been taken in 1901 or 1902, the first year of the society. The McKliney Literary Society was one of several literary groups at the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, during the d early 20th centuries that were geared to promoting and teaching public speaking skills to the students. Very similar to GLASS-SC21232, this picture depicts members of the club alongside Dr. Ballatine (third from the left on the second row), who was a critic of the debates. William Gay Ballantine was a professor of Bible studies and according to some βhe has won the affection of every T. S. man by his modest and scholarly life as a revealer of religious truths. Unassuming in all his actions and painstaking in his efforts to inspire his classes with the spirit of scholarship, he goes about his daily tasks. To him the men of T.S. look as the source of that inspiration which has resulted in nobler Christian lives of service and fellowship with God.β (Massasoit, 1911, p. 17). Those shown in the photograph [top row, L to R] are: Frederick B. Wise (1902), Frank D. Smith (1906), [2nd row] Robert J. Craig (1902), William G. Currier (1904), Elmer Berry (1903), [3rd row] Professor William G. Ballantine (faculty advisor), Von Victor Roseboro (1903), John Henry Gray (1904), [4th row] Fred Metz (also spelled Metts) (1903), Jack E. Sullivan (1902), Samuel B. Wilson (1902), William E. Lewis (1904), [bottom row] John F. Simons (1900), Augustus Maier (1904), Noble P. Randel (1904), Thomas A. Clark (1903), and Erich L. Moraller (1904).
