This is a souvenir program about the 1941-1942 Springfield College Exhibition Team. The program cost ten cents. On the cover is The Joy of Effort, one of R. Tait McKenzie’s best known sculptures. The first page describes the college’s celebration of Basketball’s Golden Jubilee, as that winter marked the fiftieth anniversary of the sport’s invention. The next two pages describe the history of the Springfield College Exhibition Team. The pamphlet includes a program, a list of the gymnasts, pictures from performances, and that season’s exhibition schedule. The penultimate page describes Springfield College’s strong athletic program, and the final is a letter from President Ernest M. Best. Under the leadership of Professor Leslie J. Judd, the purpose of the Springfield College Exhibition team was to promote and maintain an interest in gymnastics, dance, and the artistic phases of physical education in schools, colleges, YMCAs, and recreational centers. The Exhibition Team has appeared before thousands of spectators in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In 1941, the team appeared before thirty-five-thousand spectators in twenty-five cities. Leslie J. Judd (1888-1987) was a Springfield College faculty member and graduate from the class of 1920. Judd spent thirty-one years coaching gymnastics at his alma mater. While at Springfield College, he also coached track and field, swimming and diving, cross country, soccer, and dance. Judd was born in Melbourne Victoria, Australia, where he served as a physical education director until World War I. During the war, he served in the Australian forces. His famous gymnastic tableaux, which unified the aesthetic and athletic qualities of the sport, were presented throughout the world, and his expertise was the subject of a feature story in Life Magazine in 1939. In 1955, he received the Tarbell Medallion, which recognizes alumni who have made significant contributions to the college. In 1962, he received an honorary doctorate of humanities from Springfield College.

The history of Gymnastics at Springfield College goes all the way back till nearly the founding of Springfield College in 1885, when Dr. James Naismith, the creator of Basketball, was an early SC Gymnast. Beginning in 1904, the SC Gymnastics team would travel to cities to perform their Gymnastics routines. At the end of their travels, they would perform a “Home Show” at Springfield College, a show they continue to perform to this day. It was during the reign of head coach Leslie Judd, widely considered a father of modern Gymnastics, that the Gymnastics exhibition team really gained a claim to fame. In fact, in 1941 the team appeared before thirty-five-thousand spectators in twenty-five cities.
