<mods:abstract>This is a black-and-white photograph of six Springfield College gymnasts in an unidentified gym beneath a basketball hoop. Two of the students are standing in the center and are dressed as clowns. The other four students are performing balancing acts on either side of the clowns. The clowns were part of a routine that the Springfield College gymnasts performed during exhibition shows. TWe believe this photograph is from before 1955, because a note on the back says, "Please return to L. J. Judd."</mods:abstract>
<mods:note>he history of gymnastics at Springfield College stretches nearly as far back as the school’s founding in 1885. Leslie Judd, widely considered a father of modern gymnastics, was the team’s first coach. Dr. James Naismith, the creator of basketball, was an early member of the team.</mods:note>
