Description:
Eighteenth century copperplate engraving 1. 2. 3. Mustelus Spinax, Bellonii, &c. 4. An Insect called the Walking-stick depicts three views of a shark with an insect at the bottom. The print's caption identifies it as the 288th plate within volume seven of George Edwards' naturalist anthology A Natural History of Birds, alternatively known as volume three of Gleanings of Natural History; both versions of the text focus on ornithological studies yet contain several examples of relatively diverse creatures. Author Edwards drew and engraved all artwork for his texts, having intensely studied each specimen from life. His figures seem most concerned with accuracy, giving little concern to composition. Edwards' stylized hatch marks- short and dense- hinder his portrayal of texture, resembling fur instead of the smooth bodies of this watercolor paint layers, added after printing, distinguish the figures from their plain background yet are not completely authentic, as evidenced by the overly pink tinges on figures 1-3. Despite small imperfections, the print excels in reconciling its distinctive style with its lifelike portrayals of fauna.
