A Chart of the Harbour of Boston, with the Soundings, Sailing-marks, and other Directions
Description:
This rare map, published by Sayer & Bennett in 1777, shows Boston Harbor in fine detail with its islands, shoals, fortifications, and Boston peninsula. It stretches from Nahant Bay in the north to Hull in the south, with Boston itself at the far left, vividly highlighted in rich red pigment. Harbor charts like this one were of crucial importance during the Revolutionary War, for they provided indispensable information to navy officials for plotting their course through treacherous waters, or to army commanders as they strategized offensive or defensive operations. This map, published in the midst of the Revolutionary War, also would have been of great interest to the English populace across the Atlantic, who viewed the distant events with understandable interest and concern. Robert Sayer began his career as a map publisher with Philip Overton in 1745 and worked on his own after Overton's death in 1751. His acquisition of Thomas Jefferys's assets in 1768, and eventual partnership with John Bennett in 1770, created a famous map publishing firm. This is a beautiful map with great historical importance.
