These field notes were included in letters from Joel M. Halpern to Carl and Nettie Halpern during the time spent in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. These are primarily notes from interviews of a range of merchants of various ethnicities. He also discusses the ethnic divisions within schools in Nam Tha; what Kamu workers in Luang Prabang pay in order to work and travel; and the qualities of the Lao character.
