This lantern slide shows a large group of boy scouts sitting in the bleachers at Pratt Field and watching an athletic event during 1914. During the late 19th and early 20th century, “normal work” played a vital role at the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College. As part of the school's curriculum, students traveled to churches, sunday schools, playgrounds, and public schools, and performed a variety of duties. Depending on the students, these service opportunities were either paid, for credit, or on a volunteer-basis. The boy scouts pictured here were likely brought to Springfield College through a service event organized by the students.
