A 4" x 6" black-and-white group photograph of about 60 schoolchildren and several adult women posted on the front steps of 147 Prince Street, West Newton (the Carroll School), c. 1930. The Carroll School, a small private school, was founded c. 1884 by Miss Rosalie Carroll and Miss Kate Carroll at their home on Temple Street, West Newton. The Carolls and their school soon moved to 147 Prince Street. In 1900 the school was inherited by headmistress and owner Mary S. Barbour. The school operated until about 1961. In the 1960s it was purchased and became a new school, also named the Carroll School, which moved to Lincoln, MA, in 1971 and serves children with verbal learning differences.
