U.S. (United States) or American flag. Hand stitched construction. Thirteen red and white stripes with each stripe sewn together. Blue rectangular panel of fabric taking up the upper left quadrant of the flag. Thirty-five white stars sewn onto blue fabric rectangle in upper left quadrant. Thirty-five stars are sewn on in five rows with seven stars in each row evenly spaced. Civil war era according to paper note stitched to left-hand border of flag stating "Misses Henry, 457 Center Street, Newton, Mass. This flag hung out during the civil war". Written in ink on left-hand border is "J. Q(?). HENRY." Two metal eyelets allow for flag to be hung on left-hand border. String attached at top eyelet. J Q (John Quincy) Henry is on militia rolls 1856 and 1861 and 1869 (Newton)
