At the time that Rev. Goodspeed submitted a letter of resignation to the First Congregational church of Springfield, Massachusetts in September of 1907, his church was one of the largest and wealthiest of the denomination in Massachusetts. Sir George Williams founded the YMCA in London in 1844. By 1851 the movement had reached the shores of North America. Williams was knighted in 1894 by Queen Victoria and died in 1905.
