"On September 1, 1983, all Bay Area news gathering operations were scrambling for local angles and accurate information that would shed light on the deliberate downing of commercial KAL jetliner '007' which had strayed into Soviet airspace. Breaking local news took a back seat to this shocking international story. What were the judgments made by Bay Area [news] editors and reporters as they gathered, verified and packaged their news produce for public consumption? Our purpose in making this report was to show people how many judgement calls are made by editors, reporters, producers and writers before the news ever gets to the public. We wanted viewers to understand the factors and limitations which effect news [gatherers] so that they won't necessarily take the news at face value. "KQED sent 4 camera crews out into the field to 'ride shotgun' with the news-gathering crews from a local television station, an all-news radio station, a major San Francisco newspaper and a small suburban paper from a community south of San Francisco."--1983 Peabody Awards entry form.
