<mods:abstract>A view up Beacon Street past the Beebe-Brewer houses to the State House. The mansions, built by two Boston merchants, James Madison Beebe and Gardner Brewer, on the grounds of the John Hancock House after that landmark was destroyed, were demolished to make room for the lawn of the new West Wing of the State House. The Swift-McNutt Company of Boston tore down the buildings. Road work is being done on Beacon Street.</mods:abstract>
