  <mods:abstract>A portion of the Beebe-Brewer houses remains standing in front of the Massachusetts State House. The mansions, built by two Boston merchants, James Madison Beebe and Gardner Brewer, on the grounds of the John Hancock House after that landmark was destroyed, were demolished to make room for the lawn of the new West Wing of the State House. The Swift-McNutt Company of Boston tore down the buildings.</mods:abstract>
