Album 46-A is one of two albums of mainly 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 prints taken by William Sumner Appleton, founder of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (now Historic New England). This album bears the penciled inscription: "volume 3, end 1907; winter 07-08, spring 1908" and includes approximately one hundred views of landscapes, streets and early houses. The geographic scope includes Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, and Salem in Massachusetts, Dover, Durham, and Portsmouth in New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Topics include historic buildings and houses, such as the Custom House in Salem and Wadsworth House in Cambridge, as well as the Chelsea Fire of 1908-9, dogs; and soldiers.
