Lyman postulates the extent of several coal beds based on the stratification of several borings around Cow Bay. He mentions visiting with several of Mr. Lesley's professional and social acquaintances in Nova Scotia. Lyman transcribes a letter from Mr. C. H. Harrington, a Sydney merchant, regarding a coal seam, and includes his intended response. He describes a new decimal system that he is developing, and places an order for a copying machine for Mr. Bourinot. Note that Lyman's Cow Bay was renamed Port Morien in 1895.
