<mods:abstract>This ambrotype depicts members of the 38th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment at camp on the beach of Ship Island, Miss. during the Civil War. The photograph was taken in Dec. 1862 by an unknown photographer and probably was owned by Francis William Loring, a lieutenant with the regiment; an inscription on the verso of the image reads, "Field & Staff 38th M.V. FW Loring Ship Island, Miss. Dec. 25, 1862." Photo. 2.97 Removed from the Francis William Loring papers</mods:abstract>
