The first map known to have been published in the English colonies of North America, and probably the first map published in the Western Hemisphere, has been attributed to John Foster, who printed William Hubbard's Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in which A Map of New England appeared. Foster is thought to have been the only man in Boston to have made woodcuts during that period. There are two versions of this map. This version of the map is known as the "White Hills" map; in the other version, the White Hills of New Hampshire are identified as the "Wine Hills."
