After graduation he worked briefly as a civil engineer and businessman before being appointed in 1884 as the first principal of the newly established Watkinson Farm School in Hartford, a position he held until his honorary retirement in 1917. He authored a book on his life there and also published a genealogy of the Smead family. "E. B. Smead '71" signed on back. "M.A.C.
