Young woman or older teenage girl's 3-piece dress of sheer, cream colored cotton, with narrow woven-in stripes forming checkerboard-like pattern, and alternating blocks of blue and red stripes/plaid; turndown collar on bodice (.128a); long, slightly puffed, curved sleeves, gathered in with smocking at bottom on each, and band cuffs; gathered in on front from neck to smocking at waist on either side of opening; also gathered in with smocking at back waist; slight peplum; front opening, with covered button (9) and hook & eye closure on underbodice; sheer, cream colored linen or cotton lining/underbodice; long skirt (.128b), gathered in under and around cotton twill tape waistband, more tightly on back; slightly longer on back; upper back opening, with hook & eye closure on waistband; overskirt (.128c) with asymmetrical draped panels and puffed section at back; plain linen waistband, with single mother-of-pearl button closure; 2 smaller of same or imitation button and loop closure holding folds on panels; also twill tape ties on one panel (probably to gathered in and hold "puff"). Fabric referred to as organdy, and dress dated ca. 1880 in original accession book entry. Fabric described as windowpane cotton, and dress dated ca. 1880-86 by previous curators. Rare "wash dress" according to consultant, Stella Blum. Dimensions for .128b below; .128a measures 21 x 12 3/4 inches (width taken at waist on both pieces); .128c not measured.
