James Holmes writing to Andrew Boden (his father or step father?) after hearing the news that his mother died. James laments the fact that he was not there to be with her on her death bed. Being a Presbyterian missionary, James talks about the comfort of religion for both his dying mother and for himself as he is grieving her loss. He asks about all of the details of his mother's death: who was with her, if she spoke any last words for him, and if she was afraid of dying.
