Letter in the form of field notes from Joel M. Halpern to his parents during his time spent in Laos with the United States Operations Mission. These notes are from interviews that translator Aram Udol did in the village of Nam Tha. He interviewed a Yao villager and a Black Thai (Tai Dam) merchant. Both speak about the crops raised in their villages (especially opium and rice), the cost of living, and how they do business.
