Bobby writes to his cousin Louisa Gass asking her to send him a list of those killed or wounded from his old regiment in the Civil War. He went on a trip with his Orderly Sergent to Crystal Springs. This was the first time he had been out of the hospital for two weeks. Bobby writes about common acquaintances who are in the service and when they will get out. He looks forward to learning to farm from Jack, buying a farm when he returns home, and trying to find a wife. He tells of receiving a paper that listed the names of those killed and wounded and was saddened to find out that two of his mess mates were killed in the war. Bobby observes that many of the sick and wounded around him are dying everyday.
