Late 19th century domestic architecture in the old quarter of Ohrid. 1954 field notes read: "That afternoon we took a bus to Ohrid (from Bitola), 75 kilometers away. It was a three-hour trip but this was partly because it was up and down mountains. Though it was a very fair day in Bitola, when reached of the mountain storm clouds had gathered and we drove in and out of a summer storm as we came down on the other side. There we had a view of Prespa Lake, the smaller lake to the west of Ohrid, and after going up and down one more mountain range we sensed Ohrid partly because three hours had elapsed but mostly because the ring of mountains seemed to contain an ethereal sort of vacuum and you just feel that a lake was contained down in it somewhere."
