<mods:abstract>The Old Elm is shown with the State House in the background on the left and Park Street Church on the right. The Old Elm, also known as the Great Elm, stood at the foot of Flagstaff Hill on Boston Common, was considered a landmark of the city and was called the oldest known tree in New England. The tree succumbed to the gales of a storm and toppled onto the ground on February 15, 1876. Parts of the tree were removed as souvenirs.</mods:abstract>
