<mods:abstract>A resolution from the "Commission" (possibly a commission within the Army Corps of Engineers, which Casey had headed?) regarding the death of General Thomas Lincoln Casey. General Casey had supervised the completion of the Washington Monument, the construction of the State, War, and Navy Department Building, and had started overseeing the construction of the Library of Congress, which was almost completed, when he died. The resolution describes the loss felt by the Commission on General Casey's death. They describe his death "as a grievous loss to our nation and in a very special sense, to our community. While his retirement depreived us as a body of the involuable assistance of his Presidency and membership, yet we felt that his continued residence here left him still associated with us in sympathy and in the recollection of the achievement of the great National Park, to whose success he so largely contributed." The Commission further instructs that "there be entered upon our minutes these expressions of appreciation of a character which could only be developed and perfected by years of faithful discharge of duty" and they ask that a copy of this resolution be sent to his widow and children.Signed by the Brig. General, Chief of Engineers and the Major of Engineers, Engineer Commissioner, District of Columbia.</mods:abstract>
