Although there is no information about the junior varsity team, our records list Gail Chmielenski Bochieme as the varsity softball coach that year. A native of Milford, Connecticut, Chmielenski graduated from the University of Connecticut and taught physical education and biology in Stanford, Connecticut, before returning to her alma mater for her master’s degree. She coached varsity softball at the University of Connecticut and Indiana State University. While earning her doctoral degree at Springfield College, she coached the softball team in the absence of Coach Potter, who was on sabbatical. Chmielenski is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Athletic Trainers Association. An avid photographer and writer, she has had numerous photographs and articles published regarding her experience at the World University Games in the Soviet Union. Beginning in 1979, she coached softball at SUNY Cortland for three seasons.
