Item Information
- Title:
- General Pershing YMCA poster (August 1918)
- Description:
-
This World War I poster has a portrait of General J. Pershing and the YMCA Emblem. Beneath is a quote by General Pershing: “A sense of obligation for the varied and useful service rendered to the army in France by the Y.M.C.A. prompts me to join in the appeal for its further financial support. I have opportunity to observe its operations, measure the quality of its personnel and mark its beneficial influence upon our troops, and I wish unreservedly to commend its work for the Army.” This poster was an advertisement for the United War Work Campaign’s fundraiser during the week of November 11, 1918. The YMCA was an integral partner in the United War Work Campaign. United War Work Campaign was created when President Woodrow Wilson suggested the separate American relief organizations "united their forthcoming appeals for funds." The seven organizations involved were the YMCA, YWCA, National Catholic War Council, Jewish Welfare Board, War Camp Community Service, American Library Association, and Salvation Army.

With the full support of the United States government, they planned to raise a total of $170,500,000 during the week of November 11, 1918 (coincidentally the day World War I ended), which they would then divide pro rata according to the percentage each of their seven budgets represented. At the time, this was the biggest drive for funds ever attempted. This poster was never distributed. John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing (September 13, 1860 – July 15, 1948) was a general officer in the United States Army who led the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Pershing is the only person to be promoted in his own lifetime to the highest rank ever held in the United States Army—General of the Armies (a retroactive Congressional edict passed in 1976 promoted George Washington to the same rank but with higher seniority). Pershing holds the first United States officer service number (O-1). He was regarded as a mentor by the generation of American generals who led the United States Army in Europe during World War II, including George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley, and George S. Patton. Little is known about S. J. Wauk, the portrait's artist.
