<mods:abstract>This video shows two lectures from Springfield College’s Symposium on Girls and Women in Sports. The symposium was held in conjunction with the celebration of fifty years of women’s varsity athletics at Springfield College and was held during homecoming weekend (October 25-26, 2013). The first lecture, titled “Nutrition for the Female Athlete,” was presented by Dr. Richard J. Wood, a Springfield College alumnus. Wood earned his PhD in nutritional science from the University of Connecticut and is now the director of the Center for Wellness Education and Research at Springfield College. Wood discusses nutritional needs and concerns based on gender and the importance of adequate energy intake. The video of Wood’s lecture cuts out before he is finished. The next two speakers present a lecture on ACL injuries, preventative exercises, and rehabilitation. The first half of the lecture is presented by Dr. Marc Brassard, a Springfield College alumnus and orthopedic surgeon. He focuses on factors that contribute to injuries, preventative steps, the anatomy of an ACL tear, and how the injuries are diagnosed and repaired. The second speaker is Dr. Guyer, who teaches human anatomy at Springfield College. She focuses on prevention programs, neuromuscular training, and how teaching athletes correct form can minimize injuries. Dr. Brassard then returns to talk about healing and rehabilitation.</mods:abstract>
