Onoe informs Chamberlin of an earthquake that hit the Kinki District, mostly the city of Kobe, and the deaths and damages it caused. Chiemi Nakata, chief translator for the Japanese edition of "On Our Own", was uninjured, but her house collapsed, and the other translators are also dealing with damage from the earthquake. Onoe asks that Chamberlin agree to an extension for the time of publication for the Japanese translation of the book because of these circumstances.
