Cole was born December 15, 1879 at North Andover, Mass. He attended the Massachusetts Agricultural College 1898-1900; Harvard Summer School, 1911; Columbia University Extension Courses, 1914-16. He taught at Deerfield Academy 1910-14, in the schools of Springfield, Mass. 1914-17, Essex County Agricultural School 1917-19. He was appointed Extension Specialist in Food Preservation at the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1919, became Assistant Extension Professor of Horticultural Manufactures in 1920 and Extension Professor in 1926. In handwriting on the back of image reads "Wm. R. Cole, Extension Specialist in Hort. Manufactures"
