A peasant leads his loaded donkey through Bitola streets. 1954 field notes read: "It is amazing how frequently and quickly the sphere of outside influence on the area changes in this country. Here in Bitola, it was Greece with a large part of the population from Aegean Macedonia or from parts of Macedonia which were formerly part of Greece and are now part of Yugoslavia. The head of Savez for Prosvetu (Council for Education) had been expecting us and in most surprisingly efficient manner, arranged for a hotel room, bus tickets for Ohrid the next afternoon, and a car to take us around the next morning."
