Critique of Du Bois's renunciation and idealism: "Dr. DuBois steps down from his lofty pedestal of human rights and race equality and puts his reliance in a dubious political-economic experiment. Negro autarchy or political, industrial, or economic autonomy in the midst of an arrogant overpowering democracy is not only unfeasibly but unthinkable." Lambastes Du Bois's Marxism; laments his (unlike Trotter's) "delightful delusion" that justice, equality, and human rights were coming. "But the real tragedy of Dr. DuBois' sudden conversion will be its reflex upon those of the Talented Tenth who looked to him for light and leading with the devotion of discipleship. 'Howl fir tree for the cedar has fallen!'"
